Vignette 5: Courtney, an Artisan Performer (ESFP)
By Dr. Lovegood
Courtney is an Artisan Performer, ESFP. She's 26 years old and enjoys doing temp work. That way she gets to
meet all kinds of people and work in many different places. She is popular as a temp worker and has been offered
several positions but has turned them down because she knows she'd get bored working at the same company all the
time. She's taking college classes so she can become a classroom aide working with children with moderate to
severe disabilities.
Courtney's love life has been very tempestuous. She seems to deliberately pick losers. She says that she needs
to feel needed. Her boyfriends have all had serious flaws from being drug users to being ex-convicts. Inevitably,
her violent love turns to violent rage. Courtney and her boyfriend will scream at each other, sometimes causing
the police to have to be called. She's ended up in the hospital more than once after attacking a boyfriend who
gave back better than he got. In one relationship, he cheated on her so she cheated on him and made sure he
knew about it.
Her current boyfriend is more of the same. He's on parole for selling drugs. She was drawn to him because
of his flamboyant and generous life style. She fell in love with him in part when he told her that his mom left
when he was a baby and he was raised by his grandparents who have cut off all contact with him. She can't understand
how his grandparents can reject him like this. Courtney thought this relationship would be better since he supported
himself and admitted his guilt although he still insisted that he'd only sold drugs a couple of times.
However, soon after they started living together, he lost his job as a car salesman (she later realized he'd lied
about that job) and hung around the apartment all day. At first, he did some great stuff she'd needed done, but now
he's doing very little. When she asks him about looking for a job, he's got all kinds of stories. Courtney goes back
and forth between screaming at him and calling him a loser and crying about how much she loves him and never wants to
lose him. He regularly plays his "poor little boy with no family" card.
Courtney's gotten to the point of thinking about having children. She has realized that the boyfriends she has had
would make rotten fathers, so she is motivated to find a better man. She knows she needs to find a man who doesn't need
her to fix him up. Instead she wants to find a man who is fine all by himself but wants to share his life with her.
After getting to this point, Courtney knows that her boyfriend is not likely to change. His problems are his problems.
She's tried to help him but can't, so it's time to move on. She can't resist one last gesture, though. She's decided to
put all of his stuff on the patio and have the manager change the locks. She wishes she could see the look on his face
when he finds out.
What do you think of Courtney's plan? Do you know or are you an Artisan Performer and can you give information about
how other Performers have dealt with the dating game?
