NEW AGE MUSIC BY COMPOSER
and
NEW AGE MUSIC BY CATEGORY

"We make music in new ways,
and we hear music in new places."
--Brian Eno

Last Update: February 2006
(February 2006: Newage music has become so prevalent in recent years I no longer update this list much.)

INTRODUCTION

The information here comes from my collection of 600+ albums of New Age music I've collected over the years. I don't consider myself a connoisseur, I've just always liked electronic instrumental music and have collected as much as I could over the years. As newage music constantly expands, this list and comments will never be complete. My collection will never be complete, which is my excuse for anything you find left out or deficient.

I also include some second opinion comments by a friend of mine, Paul, who really is a connoisseur of this music and has a collection even bigger than mine. It's nice to get a second opinion on the music. Other comments come from the book "All Music Guide" which I picked up at the local bookstore, and from a listing found on the Internet at site ftp.uwp.edu compiled by Behr de Ruiter. The filename was "newage1.list".

There are a few categories of newage music covered first. The rest is a list of music here is arranged by composer, since whenever I find an album I like I tend to see what other albums there are by that same composer. Within each composer I attempt here to group together similar sounding albums, and to give suggestions of other albums to try if you like a particular one.

It would be nice to get numerous other opinions on this music, agree or disagree, as everyone has different tastes. Just keep in mind the end purpose of this posting is to help others find more of the music they like. And if you know of something you think I might like and don't have yet, I welcome suggestions.

Conventions I use below:

MUSICIAN
     album title (date)[****]
     Comments
Try: other similar albums you might try if you like this one

Ratings:
The ratings I give in square brackets [ ] are very subjective to taste.
[****] - Excellent.
[***]-Still good.
[**]-Fair. Ok to play once in awhile.
[*]-Not so interesting to me.
[]-Not rated

(date,SPM)Spotted Peccary Musicwww.spottedpeccary.com

Albums within a group are somewhat similar. If you like one you might consider trying others from the same group. "Try:" means if you like this album then here are a few more suggestions to consider.

(The album date should be the date the album first came out. Sometimes I can't find a date on the album and don't remember when it first came out, or the date I find on the CD is the date of the CD release and not the date of the original vinyl record release.)

Disclaimer:  This is all my subjective opinion and if half the world didn't disagree with me I'd think something was wrong.

RARE AND OUT OF PRINT MUSIC:

If something is truly unavailable then I can make a CD copy of it. However I must be relatively convinced that the album is impossible to find before I make a copy. eBay is a great place to find hard to find records and CDs. Try posting a message to rec.music.newage to see if anyone knows where an original can be purchased. A lot of albums that were once out of print have since been rereleased on CD, which is quite nice. Unfortunately, a lot of other albums that were once readily available have now gone out of print. I would prefer you buy the real thing to support the composers. Also these CD-R Digital Audio recordings don't play in every CD player. Experience so far shows they play in about 17 out of 20 players.

BOOTLEG

(See my policy above)

ASHRA
     Paris Downers (1974 double CD)
Poor quality recording of what sounds like an outdoor concert. True Ashra fans should like it still. Apparently bootleg. Live at Salle Wagrem, Paris December 6th, 1974. Disk 1: Echo Waves. Disk 2: Night Dust.

MIKE OLDFIELD
US Premier of Tubular Bells 2 [***](bootleg)
Live recording of Mike Oldfield concert featuring Tubular Bells 2.

TANGERINE DREAM
Live! Improvised! (1974)[****] Froese, Franke, Baumann.
Recorded live at Reims Cathedral, Dec. 13, 1974. Very much like Rubycon. Double CD.
Phaedream (1975)[****] Froese, Franke, Baumann.
Recorded live at Royal Albert Hall, London, 1975.
Dreaming on Danforth Avenue (1992)[****]
Recorded live at the Music Hall, Toronto Canada on the 4th of October 1992.
