Bookends
Further up State Street we come to two giant cobalt blue tiled rocks made by artist
Daniel Chrynko. Borders Bookstore put them on display at the entrance to their store.
Here's a photo of one of them—there's a similar rock on the other side. The artist
named this creation "Celestial Bookends".
The Santa Barbara City Council got mad because Borders put the nice rocks here without
asking them first and obtaining a permit. But the rocks have stayed and have become an
icon of Santa Barbara.
One night vandals took a sledge hammer to this rock and destroyed it. The artist was nice
enough to replace it with another one, but the replacement just isn't the same. I really
liked the original rock pictured here.
